i know im not giving enough information. i ran a 19.56 on saturday, i started the year in february at 23.40 and i built mileage up to forty. whats a good goal for me to get by october 25th?

If you held 40 all summer and are going to do speed work this fall, you can improve a lot. If I was you, I start doing speed work around the beginning of September and try and get some more races under your belt before that date. That way you can set goals every week or two which will build up to a bigger goal. Having said that, I think you could do something like this:
September- 19:35
Mid-September- 19:00
Early October- 18:45
October 25th: 18:15-30

i'm looking to break 18 in my first ever 5K which i think would be cool; and then we'll see how far i can take it throughout the season
