Here's Some Good Advice
Don't run a marathon until you've lost your speed, or at least until you're in your 20s.

me and my teamates tried a 10 min mile once for a cool down and it was sooooo funny...we could have walked the same pace, and we were talking perfectly normal just like we were standing and talking

Re: Here's Some Good Advice
thank you mae you took the words out of my mouth. lol i hate when people say well pre ran this workout so it must work your not pre you can't base stuff off of what he did he has a completely different body than you and he was good mainly because he had an amazing will to run and a butt load of natural ability. don't do something just cuz someone else does it. but yeah we def. shouldn't be running marathons until we're at least out of college.

Re: Here's Some Good Advice
I used to want to do a marathon by the time I was 16, mostly because I sucked at running so I thought I could be good if I ran really long distances. Now I realized that's just stupid, I'm going to start marathons when I'm 25-30.

Re: Here's Some Good Advice
I competly agree. Even like 70 yearolds run marathons. We are only in high school, (ha well not me 7th grade) but generally and since we are young we have the ability to be able to run distances like the 400 or the mile or 2 mile or 5k or whatever you run fast. When you get older, it's harder to keep that ablility. I want to do a marathon when I get older, but that's older. There's plenty of time.

Deciding when you run a marathon is a personal decision though.

Re: Here's Some Good Advice
I've heard that doing that kind of mileage can screw up your growth plates... I don't know if it's true, but I'd rather not find out. I won't be doing anything longer than a 1/2 for quite a while... although I do think a marathon sounds like fun. just not now.

Re: Here's Some Good Advice
I'm going to dissagree here. Many many runners PR at the 5k in the weeks following a marathon because of the bigger base. It won't cause injuries and such if you build up to the distance in a reasonable manner, and while you won't be super fast in shorter events now, the challenge of the marathon isn't to finish (except for fat, out of shape joe blows) the challenge is to keep a fast pace for the whole thing. Granted, I don't think middleschoolers should be doing them, but from about gr. 9 up, as long as thier done smartly, they can be done.

Re: Here's Some Good Advice
I heard that a cat claws your eyes out if you run a marathon under the age of 16. So be aware.
