Re: Here's Some Good Advice
Marathoning doesn't affect growth plates. My sports doctor told me it's a thing most parents overlook or something but he said running actually is the best exersize to relieve stress from other sports such as the pounding of football.

I say we stop trying to convince these people not to run marathons. We have provided them with all of the information they need to make an informed decision and if they choose not to heed our warnings, then that's their problem. Just remember, HS marathoners, that you will never be taken seriously by other competitive runners.

If you're slow, I wouldn't take you seriously, but if you actually post a good time, I'm impressed. What time is "good"? I'd say sub 3 for a guy, sub 3:30 for a girl. Slower than that and you suck.

Re: Here's Some Good Advice
Most HSers running marathons are doing it because they aren't any good at shorter distances. The ones who are good enough to hit those times are usually too smart to do marathons.runner_dude wrote:funrunner wrote:I say we stop trying to convince these people not to run marathons. Nobody has had any proof that doing marathons are stupid for teenagers.

nope. just circumstancial evidence. like, for example, nobody on the elite level now started out with marathons in HS.runner_dude wrote:The ones who are good enough to hit those times are usually too smart to do marathons.

No top AMERICANS. I don't know what the Kenyans or Ethiopians are doing, but I suspect it involves awefully long runs.

Didn't Gerry Lindgren run insanely long distances on a pretty regular basis in HS?AudienceOfOne wrote:nope. just circumstancial evidence. like, for example, nobody on the elite level now started out with marathons in HS.runner_dude wrote:The ones who are good enough to hit those times are usually too smart to do marathons.

Re: Here's Some Good Advice
There was an article in this month's runners world about some four-year-old in India who runs extremely long distances. That's like crazy stupid...
