You know on easter, when it's all about Christ and the easter baskets are just a side thing? That's what I beleive Christmas should be, presents being a side thing and Jesus being the thing. Another thing we should imitate from easter are the 2-3 days before. In the days before easter, you remember the price Christ had to pay to give us our gift. I think in the days before Christmas we should reflect on what the world had gone through leading up to the birth of Christ. Reading Isaiah 1-39 would be perfect for that.
We have read the words so many times of the prophesies and His birth that they are just words now. Let's take the time to simply try to comprehend again that God came down in human form, all for us. When you remember that, aal the Christmas traditions don't seem to matter much anymore.
I just saw The Ambassadors new music video, thought it has to do with what I'm trying to say so here it is (watch until the end):
I remember when an 80+ year old member of my church talked about how when she was having Christmas during the Great Depression she was content with just getting an orange. She said that was one of the best Christmas' she's ever had, because she got to spend the day with her family and no distractions. Sometimes I guess it's better to be poor than rich.
In conclusion, I'm not trying to say throw all your presents away. I'm saying make them like the basket you get at easter, just a side thing. As for me, I'll be waking up 2 hours early to worship God. Jesus is what it's all about.
