Post by hxc Sat Aug 02, 2008 8:57 pm

Lightning struck a tree like 50m in front of me today on my run. It was so loud. and bright. and hot. and scary. I just stood there like an idiot for like 30 seconds. I don't think I'll be running in thunderstorms anymore......my arms and legs are a little burnt, but that's it.

    So.....how was your run?

    fo' serious

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. If I had been going a little bit faster I could be dead right now, or atleast really badly burnt since I was running on the opposite side of the road of the tree. I never knew lightning was that hot though.

yeah, those are the only conditions I won't run in. i've heard too many stories of runners either getting hit by lightning or hit by trees felled by lightning

it depends where you run. if you are in a wide open space, in which case the easiest path for the lightning to get to the ground is through your body, don't run. if you are close to lots of trees, don't run.

    Lol +1

I never run in thunderstorms, when they're around the area I run a small loop, come back and check the weather, and then run another loop to complete my run.

hehe, you just basically just said don't run in a tstorm. "wide open spaces-don't run, surrounded by trees-don't run".

well if you are running through an urban area or a town it can be okay. there are places with no trees but lots of buildings with weather-vanes that the lightning would rather hit than you.

Yeah, you're pretty much safe running downtown in a big city, the only problem is almost no one on here lives in one. Neutral

Well yeah but the houses are bigger and have weather vanes to attract the lighting. Probably not as safe as a city, though Neutral
