Should I raise my mileage? Empty Should I raise my mileage?

Post by Tri Babe 518 Tue Jul 01, 2008 11:35 pm

Ok, my coach wants to hold me back at about 25 MPW because I am doing so much other training, which I think is not enough. During dead period when I'm not allowed to talk to my coach, I have secretly been raising my MPW to about 30-35. I really want to continue to increase my MPW even more. Should I listen to my coach? She keeps saying all this stuff about "peaking at the right time" and "running your best at state and regionals", but I've cut back on some of my other training so I can focus on XC training more. I told her this and asked if I could raise mileage, and she said I couldn't. What do I do? This is really my first year running competitively, so I don't know.

yeah your definetly fine at 30-35mpw. and im just gonna throw this out there doing really high mileage isn't always benefiting don't just keep building your mileage because you think you should not everyone can do a lot of mileage and will just end up paying for it but if your want more mileage 30-35 a week is definetly fine.

Well, keep where you are at (30-35 mpw) for a couple more weeks and then I would definitely increase it if you are feeling comfortable with 30-35. Maybe then increase it to 40 mpw, then 45 etc.

your coach is ignant, especially if your in HS. heck, work up to 50, but only increase by 10%. 25 mpw will get you nowhere unless they're all tempo. and then you're risking injury.

Heres a tip for you. You will suck until you train hard. You eithier do alot of tempo or run alot of miles. 20 miles a week will get you to 267th in a 300 person race.

She wants to peak at the right time if that means anything to you.

And you shouldn't be talking because you don't stretch.

Well she has lets see probably, 4 months till regions? Tempo runs and high milage isn't peaking. Intervals are.
    I shouldn't be talking?
    Who won Regions?
Who took 5th at state in Xc?
Who took 3rd at state in the Mile?
and then who runs a 21 minute 5k?

Ok, buddy, I have no beef with you, but tbernard is one of the fastest people on this board (assuming he is real, which might be a stretch).

To the OP, more mileage does not cause peaking. More quality work causes peaking.

To Sadie, 30-35 mpw is not big mileage. 40-45 mpw is not big mileage. 60 mpw really isn't even that high. In HS, I would call anything over 70 high mileage, but for college and professional runners that is like weekend warrior stuff.

To the OP, once again, go ahead and build up to 50 mpw. You won't destroy your body if you do it right (small mileage increases, not too much tempo/other quality work, etc.). Follow the 10% rule if you want, or you could do a +5 every 2 weeks like:

    30
    30
    35
    35
    40
    40

It is highly unlikely that you will get hurt if you build up that conservatively. The 10% rule really is what is absolutely 100% safe. A little more than that probably won't hurt you, but there is a risk. 30 mpw is pretty worthless for any HS runner who has hopes of being any good at all.

    bees and tbird:
hmm hate to say it hes got you there but just cuz your faster doesn't mean you know squat.
the guy two years ago who got second? state in the mile for d2 was a complete dumbo he said he did 500 pushups right before the race and my bro always made fun of him and was like whats your secret? and he goes run till you bleed lol in this retarded voice. he was honestly a complete moron. that just made me think of him.

    funrunner:
i know its not big mileage lol. i've run 35 mpw im just saying that doing a lot of mileage isn't always the key..it just annoys me when people say im gonna get better by doing so and so idk..im not talking about you though. What you told him was probably fine..it just really annoys me when people say stuff like that..idk.

You have a point. I'm not a girl and I don't have the experience of a girl. But I would still say that she could try building up to 40 mpw slowly. 25 mpw is still pretty worthless.
