in 8th grade i decided to join xc because id run 5ks with my dad since i was little, but i never really trained. we had xc 3 days a week--2 practices and a race. races varied from 1.3-2.5 miles. practices were a joke. we ran like 1.5 miles then called it a day. and then races were a joke to. i never actually "raced"; if i got tired id just slow my pace down until i wasnt tired anymore. goodtimes

at my school track was for the people who couldn't make the baseball or soccer team. I made the soccer team, but from wat I heard they really didn't do anything.

Re: middle school...
I seriously hated running in MS.
there was an xc team at the school I went to for 6th & 7th, but I never considered joining.
I didn't realize that I loved running until 8th gradish.

yeah middle school was definetly a joke. our janitor was our coach and the most we ever ran was an 800 lol. it was so badddd and then in races we were all terrible and yeahh slowed down once we got tired. wow im laughing right now thinking about how pitiful we all were.

Re: middle school...
haha same. i wish our middle school had an xc team! we were so ghetto we didnt even have a track; we definitely had to run on the roads behind our school every day. we didnt do any runs longer than like 2 miles at one time and just ran back & forth on these roads. i had like a 6:21 mile haha and even that shocks me.

i didnt run in middle school, cuz i played hockey, but we didnt have a track program until this year anyways hahah. for middle school xc, they usually just run anywhere from 3k-5k depending on how they feel.

Re: middle school...
It's pathetic. We did the exact same workout everyday. 3x300, 3x200, 3x100. And we only finished it once. When our coach did let the distance guys go for a run, it's even more annoying. They go at like 6:30 pace the first mile, then have to stop and walk home. They blamed it on the heat EVERY TIME. Except for when it was raining, then they blamed it on the rain. Later in the season I started running with varsity, but I wasn't allowed to compete in their meets because of some section rules or something. But last year I didn't like running at all. Here's to going to highschool.

Re: middle school...
Bad. It was fun, but training-wise it really was awful. The weird thing is our team wasn't bad, lol. Our conference may have been small but we basically always won that and did well at the state-level in the few larger meets.
Our training was basically: Do laps around the same exact half-mile loop over and over every day, don't think we ever really did all that high mileage, probably most I ever ran in middle school was like 5 miles once. We did intervals in track and stuff though. We had a crapload of fun though, almost every day was long slow distance so we'd goof off and stuff..ah good times..
In middle school we had this girl on our team that was a beast (especially at that age) she had like a mid-11's 2-mile in 7th grade, she hasn't really improved much in HS though our coaches would run her with the guys because she could keep up/had absolutely no competition on the girls side
I think she graduates after this year, she's still one of the better runners on her team, and does good at state but nothing like she did in middle school.

I've helped out middle school XC practices before, even though I was never on the team.
They do a practice every weekday, and run as long as 5-7 miles on occasion. Pretty hardcore for middle school.

Re: middle school...
I remember the first day of track in middle school, every year was a one mile loop and drills. I remember everyone was like "Oh my God, ONE MILE, that's so far!" and it took everyone forever. And when you were one distance and made you way up to running the 2 mile loop it was considered a "big deal"
