I'm running a mile race for the first time in a longgg time on saturday. I'm more of a distance gal. my pr has been 5:27 but my coach told me i'll be under 5:10 this year! Therefore i'd like to at LEAST pr this first race. Any tips on how to go out? just any mile strategies in general would be great. thank you

Re: The mile baby
Go all out for about 40-60m to get position, and then settle. You'll feel like you're going super slow, but you'll be on pace. Second lap, just chill, third lap push it a bit, 4th lap go balls to the walls.

Re: The mile baby
To be good at the mile it is important to keep up the pace in the 3rd lap.

First lap is just chaos. Adrenaline and all that. You'll tell yourself to go out slower, but you probably will still go out hard.
Second lap is where you settle in. Pick the person you are going to run by (obviously not too fast or two slow) and just stick with them.
Third lap is hell. This is there self talk comes into play.
Fourth lap you are juiced to finish and just building up anticipation until finally you get to start your kick.
that is exactly how i see it. but like everyone else said 3rd lap is key. really pick it up on this one, and focus on that lap, the 4th will always be there waiting.

Re: The mile baby
Get a good spot the first 100m, then settle in.
Keep a decent pace for the second lap (400m-800m).
Run the third lap almost like it's your last (just don't kick the last 100m).
Run the fourth lap like it is your last, because it is. Recognize that with 100m-200m to go you should be running as fast as you can at that point.

definatley, I always do that. I love the mile, originally like you ,I told myself I was a 2mile or distance runner but near the end of the season, I found out that my strength and favourite event was the mile. Don't restrict yourself mentally from doing well

Re: The mile baby
the solution to pr'ing in the mile is a hard 3rd lap. the first 800 you should be settled in a position towards the middle/back of the pack. but on the third lap start picking people off and prepare for your final kick to the finish
