Does my coach make sense? Empty Does my coach make sense?

Post by Just Because Sat Jan 10, 2009 10:19 pm

My coach is amazing and has some good experience to his name but I don't think he is letting me run to my full potential. He doesn't like the fact that I am in the high 40's/low 50's for mileage and i keep hearing how I need to know the difference between training smart and hard. I built up the mileage slowly, i listen to my body, i take vitamins, I eat enough fruits, get enough protein, etc. What else could he be refering to? Is he worried about me burning out?

I don't know if this is a rant or an actual question but I would really like some input

    Thanks

It does sound like he's worried about you overtraining and burning out- maybe he's seen a bunch of kids do that, and he doesn't want it to happen to you?
I think though that you won't really know what he means unless you talk to him and ask him to explain specifically. Maybe he doesn't realize how careful you are? Or maybe he's worried about you burning out mentally from all the mileage/monitoring stuff? Maybe you should try and explain to him that you are really dedicated and take care of yourself and you will back off if necessary?

I'm in kind of the same situation, and it's frustrating. But I understand where my coach is coming from and I'm hoping that if I keep on being really consistent next year my coach will let me run higher mileage (which is actually like 35).

I do three speedworkouts a week and the rest are easy miles. He is not disappointed with my results, he keeps saying I need to train smart and I have done that. I don't understand what he is still talking about and I am hoping that somebody here can shed some light possibly through previous experiences similar to this or general knowledge

Sounds like he's just concerned that you might do too much. It doesn'nt sound like he's holding you back.

But is that too much? I am running 40-50mpw, he is making it sound like i run 100. He also says that I only need to do a few sit ups here and there when really core is important. I'm not 11yrs old, I can handle it but I don't want to be dropped by the best coach i have ever had..for any sport. I need his advice and support but he needs to know what I'm doing.

Maybe he is referring to the 3 speed workouts a week?!

I'd suggest the next time he says that asking him what he means.

I don't make up the speedworkouts, thats just how the club operates. I guess I just need to talk to him and see where he is getting this from

    Thanks for the input everyone

If you're just doing base training, I don't think the 3 speed workouts are the greatest idea. Yeah like runner_dude said, maybe that's why your coach is concerned, since you might peak too early or something. But obviously I don't know. I always think the same thing with my coach but then I realize I'm wrong haha.
