Tenure for Teachers Empty Tenure for Teachers

Post by whenhen Fri Dec 19, 2008 11:11 pm

Do teachers deserve to get tenure? On one hand it allows them to try out more creative ways of teaching, but on the other it makes it really hard to fire the bad teachers who abuse the privilege of having a guaranteed job.

My personal position is that we should abolish tenure because the good teachers would most likely stay good, while the piss poor ones will be rightfully fired from their job.
    What's RT opinion on this?

Basically tenure for teachers is when teachers get job security for life. After 2 years of observation, it becomes extremely difficult to fire teachers except in the case of illegal activities such as sex with a minor or other serious felonies

I deff. agree . My school in the past has had some terrible teachers (like my Spanish teacher that talked a lot about doing foreign guys..or my math teacher that just talked about retiring and hunting. Or another math teacher that I guess explained what/how a rim job was..etc.)
Thank jesus, buddah, ron hubbard that they were fired. They were decent at the beginning but I guess towards the end they just fell apart.

It seems like the good teachers stick regardless.

I didn't really make much of a point. Waste of spacee

No. Teachers should be as easy to fire as anybody else. If I do a shitty job making sandwiches, I get fired from subway. Teachers have an even more important job, and should be even easier to fire if they don't do a good job.

This is why I hate unions.

Tenure just means they have to go through due process to be fired, I don't have a problem with that so I say alright to tenure.

my mom's a teacher for 30+ years, but it would be nice to know that even if the economy eats shit, she still has a job...so yes!

I would make it harder for teachers to get tenure, e.g 10 years of good performance instead of just staying for a few years.

Teachers should have to pass a test each year on certain requirements for their teaching. Some teachers at my high school are all about the coaching and don't really care about the teaching. Those teachers that are are so easy to spot.

    No tenure.

No tenure. It sucks because I go to a Catholic school, so we just have to put up with the sucky teachers we have who arent even certified to teach what they teach.

Some of my teachers have tenure...that's why my godawful Spanish teacher didn't get cut...even though the whole school thinks she should. That's how awful she is.
Our school had pretty bad cuts last year before school ended and ironically it's all the good teachers that got cut. The bad ones were the ones teaching the longest so of course they're safe.
    So no tenure please.

The good teachers got cut because they are more expensive. My grandma was laid off at her job because she was one of the best at her job. Tenure can be overruled by decisions such as budget cuts.

Agreed. Why should we allow bad teachers to remain in our school system...?
