    Captains Empty Captains

Post by AudienceOfOne Fri Sep 12, 2008 6:09 pm

I'll be one next year (scary). our guys team has a good senior captain this year(even though i'm faster). but the girls team has a captain that can't break 22:30 and seems to think that being a good captain means counting louder in the stretches than everyone else, and we have a 19:15 frosh girl on our team. i'm boutz to ask my coach to make her girl's captain.

    but whatever.

What makes a good XC captain?

    definitley dedication
u shouldn't make someone a captain just cuz their a senior, especially if they haven't ran for four years, and think practice is a joke. if sum 1 ran all summer, and is actually willing to lead the team, that'd be some good qualities for a captian.
the captains on my team are slow, don't care, but their seniors so they're automatically captains, so whatev
    wow that was long

yea captains IMO shouldn't neccessarily be the fastest, but they should work their butt off and be top 3, be mature when they need to be, and they need to have the respect of their team.

    Captains should
    1. Train over the summer unless injuried.
    2. Care about how they run.
    3. Try to help the newbies
    4. Be the last person to leave practice.
    5. Be one of the fastest.

I'm not the captain but I still do all of the above. I even go to all the junior high meets I can make it to just to help out.
I am almost positive I'll be captain in 3 sports next year.

I was only captain in middle school, and that was just because I was the fastest.

A good captain would probably be dedicated, and chill. All the super-straight edge kids on our team who did intervals everyday all summer pretty much cried when they found out that they got worse and that they aren't captains.

We have two captains this year--only one is in the top seven.

    Both are seniors.

I can't say that I disagree with coach's decision, but I do know that there are other girls who would be better leaders. The two girls in question (captains) aren't particularly dedicated to the sport, but they are usually not distracting or destructive of the time we have together.

-shrug- I don't really care who's captain, as long as I get to run my race.

Nah, but their job is pretty much just organizing things so we deal with it.

I would have thrown in my hat for our second-fastest girl. The fastest is mostly just naturally that way, and easily sidetracked. But the other girl (and four and five too, actually) put a lot more heart into it.

we do a vote. to be eligible for captain you must be A) a current junior and B) getting a letter. To get a letter you need to finish top 7 in 3 races and go to practice consistently. personally I think sophs should be eligible as well.

edit: we vote at the end of the season for the next season's captain

I'm a captain and not our number one girl...the freshman girl who's faster then me has a extra year of xc under her belt, but she's kinda immature. & We vote on who we think should be captain.

    I agree with Alex^^

There are leaders and there are key contributors. The star players have to be good, leaders do not. Whoever steps up and everyone believes in makes a good captain. Sometimes how good you are determines how much respect the others give you, but it defenitely isn't the key factor. My senior year I was the fastest on the team, however it was only my second year and I was just there to make the team and my teammates better, but I was in no position to take over a leadership role that the one captain did. Our captain was a senior also and one of the slower guys, but everyone respected him and he led well so everyone looked up to him. I led by example and kept teammates focused. Just because you have the title of "Captain" doesn't make you a leader. Jeez didn't anyone ever watch Mighty Ducks?

I agree with all but #5. If they're someone that everyone can look towards then does it really matter how fast they are? It truly shouldn't. The fastest girls on the team could be the most stuck-up and just use their title as a tool. On our team it's whoever does the top 4 things on that list gets to be a captain.

I don't know if our team has official "captains" or not, but there are two distinct leaders on the team. Blair, even though he's not the fastest (he's had a number of injury problems) is always joking around, but as a 5th year student (only in his second year of eligibility) he knows the ropes and has experience. Rustie, the other is the fastest, and is quieter, but leads more by example.

They have to be one of the fastest on the team. In miler's case if there's no one else sub-20 then the 19:15 girl should be captain unless she doesn't really know anything. Your captain has to be someone you can rely on and lead you in a race too.

Other than that they need to be knowledgeable, motivational, and chill.

True maybe I should have put it this way:
    5. Be one best workers/ Put a lot of effort into each practice.
