Re: Talk to him, or let him be?
one of my friends from xc keeps complaining to me and isnt following the given xc schedule...my coach (well not anymore..) has them running alllll easy mileage throughout the summer. which is great in one respect, because my team really needs to work oon their endurance..although some tempos would be nice! ANYWAY, so this friend refuses to follow the schedule and is doing track workouts (like 200s, 300s, 400s) and is like "just distance is so stupid. i wanna do workouts!" i dont argue with her but shes had problems in the past peaking too early...

Re: Talk to him, or let him be?
you could find a really good informative website/book and tell the dad about it. If he just want's his kid to be good but doesn't know much about running, then he'll probably change his training if he sees something from a highly regarded coach/exercise physiologist about base training.

That's not a bad idea. I'm seriously contemplating slapping a copy DRF in my crappy track coach's face next year.*sg* wrote:you could find a really good informative website/book and tell the dad about it. Just let them be. This is the kind of training I did at his age almost exactly, it worked fine for me and my whole middle school team.

Tell her to go back on the schedule. If she doesn't, thats her choice, don't save people who don't want it/know better.

Re: Talk to him, or let him be?
in some ways I actually like the training program. 400's with full recovery build speed and improve economy. most 13 year olds don't know how to really kill a 3 mile race so it will end up being a 20-25 minute tempo run which is very beneficial. if he doesn't push too hard he could get into good shape without doing too much volume, and low volume is good for a growing 13 year old.
