Re: Stress Fracture Update
It isn't the end of the world.
Sure, you will have lost a good bit of fitness, but if you just follow your coaches training plan and work hard, you can get back to where ever you were before. Just be happy you aren't like 27, with the window slamming shut on your speed while you have a stress fracture, you still have 10+ years of quality 5k speed.

Re: Stress Fracture Update
6 weeks and you should be able to run as much as you want, right? that gives you a whole month and a half just for training before the end of the xc season.
other people can correct this advice, but what i would do would be to devote 2 weeks to just base and getting back to good mileage, and use the remaining month to so the workouts you need to to get a good time at the end of the season.

Re: Stress Fracture Update
with 800m to go in a 5k this september, coming off 5:25 pace for 2.6 miles, and about to head up a steep incline, my vision
blurred from a lack of oxygen and my legs feeling about 500 pounds, I think I'll wish that I were injured. make the best of any situation.....enjoy the time off and come back newly energized.

PTZ, you make a good point, but one thing about that post just kind of irked me: not all of us have good coaches or even coaches with a "training plan". Following her coach's training could be an aweful idea.

Unless you live in a town where the coach is just doing it for the check (Those kinds of coaches are ridiculously rare) then your coach makes a better plan than you do, I guarantee it.funrunner wrote:PTZ, you make a good point, but one thing about that post just kind of irked me: not all of us have good coaches or even coaches with a "training plan". there are a lot of coach's that mean well but they don't know what peaking is so they have no traing plan.ProtestTheZero wrote:Unless you live in a town where the coach is just doing it for the check (Those kinds of coaches are ridiculously rare) then your coach makes a better plan than you do, I guarantee it.funrunner wrote:PTZ, you make a good point, but one thing about that post just kind of irked me: not all of us have good coaches or even coaches with a "training plan". Re: Stress Fracture Update
When you start walking for fitness, go on a treadmill and set the incline up really high.
Can you use a bike? You can get really great workouts on one. Or how about water running. It has no impact on your fractures, but can be very beneficial.

Re: Stress Fracture Update
I don't know about the non-peaking part, but I do know there are bad coaches who mean well. My sister ran at a small catholic school so I know this is true at least there.ProtestTheZero wrote:That is just plain untrue.AudienceOfOne wrote:there are a lot of coach's that mean well but they don't know what peaking is so they have no traing plan.ProtestTheZero wrote:Unless you live in a town where the coach is just doing it for the check (Those kinds of coaches are ridiculously rare) then your coach makes a better plan than you do, I guarantee it.funrunner wrote:PTZ, you make a good point, but one thing about that post just kind of irked me: not all of us have good coaches or even coaches with a "training plan". Re: Stress Fracture Update
Relax?
You don't need to run a 4:40 next year to be a good runner. Enjoy Cross and Indoor and you will end up in good shape, and more importantly, happy. Worrying about running all the time is what gets people to quit running their sophomore year of college.

Re: Stress Fracture Update
If you are concerned that what you are doing won't keep you in shape, it most likely won't. Believe that you are in shape, and it will happen. You aren't the only runner to get hurt before, and there are stories of runners who came back after an injury and did great. Deena Kastor was hurt for several weeks leading up to a race and she won it.
Just work hard, don't just ride the bike, work hard on it, like you did with your pt today. Keep up the little things too. Work on strength/core/flexibility even more and there is a good chance you will be back stronger.

Re: Stress Fracture Update
Have you ever experienced any coaching from a coach other than your own? The fact is that most schools without a long XC/track tradition do not require a coach to know anything. Especially for XC, it's often just any teacher who will come out and make the children run. My track coach, for example, is one of the worst distance coaches I could possibly imagine. The longest he ever had us run was 4 miles and we only did that three times throughout the season. EVERY other day we did track workouts. If I would have asked this guy what to do during the winter before track, I would have been lucky to improve as much as I did (which was still not much).ProtestTheZero wrote:That is just plain untrue.AudienceOfOne wrote:there are a lot of coach's that mean well but they don't know what peaking is so they have no traing plan.ProtestTheZero wrote:Unless you live in a town where the coach is just doing it for the check (Those kinds of coaches are ridiculously rare) then your coach makes a better plan than you do, I guarantee it.funrunner wrote:PTZ, you make a good point, but one thing about that post just kind of irked me: not all of us have good coaches or even coaches with a "training plan".
