I've played piano for 8 or 9 years. I taught myself quite a bit of theory and now I can improvise pretty well too. Not quite the same as playing guitar, but it's still pretty freakin' awesome.

So how do you guys feel about people learning guitar solely through tabs? I play with some people who only know tabs and though know next to nothing about playing music. I think it's terrible. I tell them to play an Am chord and they're like "WTF?"

I hate that. In jazz band some kid joined and asked for tabs because he couldn't read music. So the teacher printed out tabs for him and he still sucked wang.

Guitar Hero players are a lot less annoying than people who play actual guitar with just tabs.

    I play Guitar Hero.

I play, have for about 4 or 5 years. I've got a limited edition ibanez RG, and a line 6 spider 2 amp. Although I do fall into the 'knows all about tabs, nothing about music', sadly. Although I can play an Am chord, and most others, I cant read music. I learned bass cleff for when I was in school band, so that doesn't help much.

Well as long as you know the chords you know something. If I ever want to try writing a song and I give my friends a chord progression they shit a brick trying to figure out what it means.

One of my friends beat Through the Fire and Flames on Expert. We decided not to talk to him for like a week afterwards. We decided he needed some time to reflect on his life choices.
