Tempos
so ive been doing a mixture of tempos. some that are short and fast(3-4 mile) and then some longer ones of 6-10 miles at a comfortably hard pace. both i feel are great workouts but was wondering which is more beneficial. i am training for 5ks this fall.

Re: Tempos
It depends on your pace. What pace do you run for your 3 mile, 6 mile, and 10 mile tempos?
I've never heard of a 10 mile tempo either.

Re: Tempos
Yeah a ten mile "tempo" really isn't a tempo at all. I've heard that to calculate your tempo pace, you should take your 5k mile split and add 30 seconds. It's a difficult run, immensely helpful but difficult and because of the pace it should be 2-5 miles I think I've heard. So if you are a guy who runs a 18 min 5k at 5:47 mile pace you should do your tempos somewhere around 6:17 mile pace.

Ryan Hall did 10 mile tempos in highschool, so I'd imagine they're beneficial.

Re: Tempos
i doubt tempo 10 miles would be anything CLOSE to the pace of tempo 5 miles....

Re: Tempos
i do the 4 mile tempos at 5:50 to 6:00 minute pace and the ten milers are at around 6:40 pace. both are great workouts. i just want to know which one would be better right now training for 5ks in the fall.

Re: Tempos
10 mile tempos are a big deal in some training plans. They work.

Re: Tempos
10 miles at 6:40 pace isn't a tempo, it's just a long run. So do both, because tempos and long runs are both important. Long runs are generally 60-90 seconds slower than 5k pace.

Re: Tempos
i say the shorter ones, 10 mile tempo might not help for a 5k as much as it would for a half or full marathon

Re: Tempos
I don't think any of us have the base to support a workout like a 10 mile tempo. I vote for the 4 mile tempo because you'll be able to run it at true threshold pace and will get more benefit from it.

not yet anyway, we should in a month or 2 after the summer training, switching from track to xc/longer distances
