Half or 5K?
So my cross country season starts August 11 and there is a half on August 2. I want to prove to my coach what I can do in the 5K but I believe it'd be more beneficial to try the Half. What should I do?

Re: Half or 5K?
I'd focus on the 5k if I were you. Unless you only do 1 or 2 long runs and do a 2 hr+ half, it might affect your performance in xc

i say the 5k, if u run the half like a race, it will be to hard on your body.

Re: Half or 5K?
you could safely do either, but i think the 5k has more benefit. i don't see how the half could help you that much....

Re: Half or 5K?

one 13.1 mile run will not help with endurance.*run*Forever* wrote:it would just help w/ endurance, but break your body down to much.

and it wouldn't break his body down either. really, any of us except for that one 7th grade girl on here could handle a half.

Re: Half or 5K?
I think it depends what your coach is into whether or not he/she wil be impressed by the 1/2 or the 5k. The 5k is more what you should focus on for XC, but I think the 1/2 shows more dedication and just plain enjoyment of running. I did a 1/2 in the middle of track season (probably not such a good choice, but I don't like track anyway...) and my coach was pretty happy about it. Anyway, I think you would probably be pretty well recovered by the start of XC even if you did the 1/2... especially if you took it easy for a couple days after the race... it also depends on how long your long runs are up until now. If I were you though, I would probably do the one that seems like more fun. There will be time to show you're coach what you can do throughout the season.
