    Breaking 5 Empty Breaking 5

Post by Theroux Fri Mar 13, 2009 11:49 pm

So I ran my first mile in a race yesterday and hit 5:05. 800m in I was on pace but after that my time slipped. Tomorrow I have another shot at getting under in a 4x1600. Any advice on running the mile would be appreciated.

Go hard in the beginning. Its really hard to even or negatively split.

the reason why it's so hard to even or negatively split is because you go too hard in the beginning, for whatever reason, and then fall off the pace. running the last 800 on tired and lactic-acid filled legs while trying to hang on is going to be a hell of a lot harder than trying to pick up the pace when you feel okay.

theroux- it sounds like the slipping up was a mental thing; the third lap is the hardest because you're tired and you doubt yourself. i think with a few more races/experience you'll learn how to push through it. it usually helps me to focus on my form on the 3rd lap, it's supposed to help to speed up when you want to slow down. 5:05 is really good for a for a first race, so congrats and good luck on your race!

He probably doesn't have a choice, though I agree 3 events in 3 days this early in the season is a bad idea.

Best thing to do is to find a guy slightly faster than your goal and stick with him as long as possible.
