Who swims?
I remember there was a few swimmers on here. 2 days in and I'm sore as hell because I'm in the fast lane now and it is so much harder. Any way how many swimmers are on here?

My coach puts all the new people in the 50 free because it is short and easy. Before you do HS swimming I would do club swimming in the summer if they have that near you just so you learn the basics before the real season starts.
I would stick to short distances first and then once you get that down move up to the longer stuff and only do freestyle and backstroke until you get the hang of the other strokes (butterfly takes a little bit to learn and personally I can't do breast stroke worth crap but some people learn that as quickly as free and back)
If you can get under 40 seconds your first time you'll be fine. Under 30 if you want to be varsity (of course this depends on the team). My first 50 free time was in the low 30's and through out the season I got better (I think I pr-ed every meet except one) and worked my way down to 23.97.

Re: Who swims?
I think im going to try and get some lessons just a couple to sort out my stroke then just use it as cross training cause of the low impact

Re: Who swims?
I can't really help much with times, but for picking your event:The Harrier wrote:question:

Generally, people are either freestylers/backstrokers (long strokes) or breaststrokers/butterfliers (umm I forget what they're called haha) although there are exceptions.
Try swimming some freestyle and breaststroke in front of a coach/someone who knows about swimming and see which you're better at. If you're naturally good at free, stick to that and backstroke. If you're good at breaststroke, do that and decide if you want to learn fly.
And generally, if you're a distance runner you will are probably also a distance swimmer. Your muscle fibers don't change just because you're in the pool. You can try the 400 free (that's the longest event my hs offers, idk about yours) or the 200 breaststroke or something a bit longer in distance like that.
hope that helps a little.

Re: Who swims?
baby got track- I'm a sprinter in swimming lol but everything else I agree with. I'm a long stroke swimming but I am ok at butterfly and I no longer have to do breast stroke again because I re-injuried a old injury (that only hurts when I kick the breaststroke kick) so the coach told me I don't have to ever swim that stroke again. HECK YES!

Re: Who swims?
RWS- you have pretty good track speed for the shorter distances so it's not that weird that you sprint.
I have almost no sprint speed so the 50 free is disastrous for me lol. and how can you not like breaststroke?? seriously. haha.
xotrackkgirl- haha yes you are an exception.
I am an exception too; I swim free and breast... well not anymore
but I am still going to swim in the summer I think!

1. It hurts my legs to kick that way
2. You can't muscle your way through breaststroke like you can with the other 3 strokes.
3. It is soooo slow.
What I have noticed is that bigger guys do fly, free, back and littler guys do breaststroke. Maybe I am totally wrong but thats what I noticed.
