    Cramps Empty Cramps

Post by whenhen Sat Nov 15, 2008 9:43 pm

Today for a 12 miler, I was cramping up virtually the entire time. I had 1 dixie cup of watered down gatorade every three miles, and drank 1.5 L of water the prior day.
I didn't have breakfast before that, and yesterday's dinner was a slice of pizza and a slice of pumpkin pie at my school's homecoming game (we lost).
If it's relevant, the temp fluctuated between 77-91 degrees F for the run.
How do I stop cramping up during runs, because this is like the 3rd time in the past two weeks that I've cramped up for the full run.

When I usually cramp up I try belly breathing and it works well if you hold it up for about a minute or so.

Sometimes a little extra potassium before you run can help if it's a muscular issue. If it's lung/chest pain (like a stitch?) sometimes it's good to slow your breathing down and make sure you aren't breathing unevenly or anything. Were you hydrated before you ran, or did you just start during practice? I don't know if that's enough water depending on how fast you were going....

My coach told me to stride or belly breathe when I felt one coming on, it seems to work. But sometimes they get so bad the pounding hurts and striding just makes it worse.

Try stretching your sides really well next time before you run.

Once the smoke clears up, I'll try to start stretching the sides more, and do deeper breathing.
    Thanks a lot
