when to take the ice bath Empty when to take the ice bath

Post by *sg* Sat Oct 04, 2008 6:09 pm

so this may be a stupid question, but is it ok to take an ice bath the day after the hard workout if you didn't run that day? will it still have the same effect? Because I did a hard workout this morning and am really cold right now, so I was thinking I would take it tomorrow (my day off).

It is most effective within a few hours of the race/workout. That being said, after my workout this morning, I ate and then napped for a while, and I'm planning on taking one soon. It's not AS good as right afterwards, but it's still good.

What do you mean the ice bath takes 2-3 days to recover from? I take them and I feel so much better the next day, and even later the same day.

You can take it any day even if you didn't workout. However it's most effective after a workout, so you'll be fine.

You guys are weird. My legs feel weird for like 20 minutes until they warm up again, then they have a spring in them. (well maybe not a spring until the next day, but they feel fine)

If your legs don't feel a ton better after an ice bath, then you are either going too cold, or too long. I ice bath just about every day (except weekends because it's closed), 10 minutes after runs and workouts, and 8 minutes the day before a race. The water is always at about 55.

Also, to the original poster, you should never take the day off after a hard workout, it impedes recovery. Just go like 3-4 miles if it was really hard, and then take the day after that off.
