OKAYZ, so there's this one guy... Empty OKAYZ, so there's this one guy...

Post by AudienceOfOne Tue Aug 26, 2008 6:38 pm

...and over the span of his life he gained large amounts of money. He was very old so he decided he should spend the money, and he decided to get a HUGE house. He decided to spend half of his fortune on the house, and the other half would go to one man who builds it. But, the only condition was that is has to be perfect.

He selects the worker, and the worker starts.

It has now been 8 weeks, and the worker finished. The rich man was on his way to inspect the house and then, if it was perfect, he would give the worker his money. The worker is in front of the house, and he sees the rich man coming to inspect it. then, in horror, he looks and sees a brick that has not been used. The house is not perfect. Worrying, he sits on it. He realizes that won't work. so, he THROWS IT UP IN THE AIR.

I guess that the rich man would think his house was perfect as long as he didn't see the extra brick?

Throwing it up in the air is an expression that means taking a chance, and when he throws the brick he's taking the chance of the old man knowing it's not perfect or hitting the old man and getting the house and his money. Right?

I thought it was going to go like this:

There's a rich man who has a helper. The helper never lets him down and the man feels that he hasn't treated this man well enough nor given him enough money.

The man decides that he wants a new house and tells his helper to build it for him to exact specifications (no shortcuts) and he will reward him, then goes away on vacation. The helper decides that he is tired of doing everything for this man and decides to take every shortcut he can that the man won't notice until he's already away with the money.

When the man comes back, the house is finished. He's asks his helper if he has followed the directions exactly and taken no short cuts. The helper says yes. So the old man tells him that as a reward for all of his help the house is his, and goes off on his way.

    This makes more sense.

The expression "up in the air" means more along the lines of anything can happen.

For example, the fight for gold in the Olympic marathon this year was up in the air.

I said I had to infer, because myself and the rest of the others did not understand your half baked joke. Maybe when you get to where I am you will reach my reading comprehension. Although I suppose I shouldn't be talking since your comprehension is so above mine that you're the only one that got that joke.
