    knowledge is power. one of the best things you can do to improve your chances at these schools is doing all the research you can on their admissions processes.

    Very important admission factors:

    * Character/Personal Qualities
    * Recommendations
    * Rigor of secondary school record

    Important admission factors:

    * Application Essay
    * Extracurricular Activities
    * Standardized Test Scores
    * Academic GPA

    Considered:

    * Alumni Relation
    * Geographical Residence
    * Interview
    * Racial/Ethnic Status
    * Talent/Ability
    * Volunteer Work
    * Work Experience
    * First generation college student
    Are you telling me that alumni relation only means parents?

    Plus my uncle wrote my sister a recommendation letter, I think that's one of the primary reasons she got in.

    If you look at the application itself, which I have, you can check off if one/both parents have received undergrad/grad degrees from Penn. If you check anything you get a special legacy tag attached to your application. And extra recommendation letters are not nearly as important as grades/SAT/essay/required recommendations from 2 teachers. a rec from an uncle wouldn't mean much....whose uncle would say anything bad about them?

    I'm not saying I'd try to get in with a rec and a bunch of low As, I'm saying a rec in addition to high SAT scores and GPA could help me.

    It wouldn't hurt....it would be most useful in establishing that you have some ties to the school, because there is nowhere on the app to share that your uncle is an alum.

    They require one from either your junior year english teacher or history teacher, I think....so not a ton of choice.

    I'm just going into 10th grade, so my most recent SAT was 1730 in 8th grade. I'm hoping for at least 2300 in 11th grade though.

    Nice.

    I know my math will go up a lot at least because last year I took the course that was basically SAT math.

    it's mostly algebra 2 and geometry. if you are taking geometry this year pay attention, I found that the geometry on the SAT was actually fairly advanced.
