During school I have my sports in the fall & spring, winter condtioning, I'm Vice President for my class, #2 in my class, I was on Student Council, I'm on the yearbook team, and usually during the school year my mom goes to a local college so that leaves me at home to do all the chores & ect. Over the summer I babysit 5am-2:30pm 5 days a week...My friends and I usually go sidewalk chalking at least once a week at the park down the street...we also go swimming quite a bit at the dam (I don't know how to swim do this is usually interesting!) & then other than that my life is just go go go for things dealing with running &/or my friends.
sidewalk chalking? haha
Heck yea! lol We've gone thru 3 boxes of 16 mega chalk sticks this summer alone! ok that is kinda lame but it's a ton of fun.

During the summer, I do a lot of work with our animals (just dogs, now). Otherwise, when the school year rolls around, they are something of a nuisance. So lots of basic training and then I run them an extra 3-6 miles every day to get the kinks out. Of course I do lots of running by myself. Sometimes I read, but I don't have the longest attention span...it is usually a re-read or something light (newspaper, magazines). I have work, but since I'm self-employed it isn't really a reliable income. Invariably, I get tons of business during final exams, with one or two jobs over the summer. It's crazy. But I do love not having to go into the office every day. My sister and I fence a lot when it isn't too hot outside. We don't fight competetively anymore, but it's still fun to spar when we have the time. Usually I have studies too--this year for PSAT and SAT stuff. I nearly qualified for NMS last year and my mum flipped out and bought me all these books to study from. Yeah right. So sometimes I'll pull it out to try and look busy. Sometimes I go out with friends to the movies or whatever. Lots of volunteer stuff too--I work for an animal rescue as a trainer/transport and sometimes we pull dogs from shelters (that's every other weekend or so), and I'm a coach for Special Olympics (swimming, track, bowling).
During the school year I don't actually do a whole lot. It's kind of a bear keeping my grades up and focusing on running, so mostly I just go out with friends on the weekends. I'm not the most social person, and I don't really feel the need to surround myself with people all the time. I appreciate the occasional quiet moment.

UW is a public school, they mostly look at grades anyway.Pinthin wrote:FinishingKick wrote:That's not right.Pinthin wrote:FinishingKick wrote:-1Pinthin wrote:I want nothing to do with business but it looks really good on a college app.

And it's not right because it's like telling the college on your application that you're someone else. If they accept you they're not going to get someone who's into doing that kind of stuff.

My brother had a 3.9 average and is pretty good a track and he didn't get in. i'm guessing its because he didn't do any after school stuff besides sports.
I dont care if they think I'm someone else.. as long as I get in. I help at our old soldiers home too and that would show who I "really am" I guess ......

Or he could've taken easy classes, messed up his application/didn't spend a lot of time on it, and/or got bad standardized test scores. Public schools overwhelmingly look at grades and test scores.

his classes weren't exactly easy, he did wait till the last minute to write his application though.
I'm not sure about his test scores but they arent bad. He was pretty happy with them.
My coaches husband is a professor at the UW and he was really surprised he didnt get in. I dunno

Right there. He could've easily made a mistake or forgotten something, that leaves a big impression on the admissions officer, and it's certainly not a good one.Pinthin wrote:FinishingKick wrote:Or he could've taken easy classes, messed up his application/didn't spend a lot of time on it, and/or got bad standardized test scores. Rushing your app is a really bad idea, because they can tell you did it and they're not going to take anyone who rushes/procrastinates doing something as important as a college app.

yeah I know, that really doesnt help what he did. Buut I think there was more then one reason for why he didn't get in.
I'm going to try and get mine in as early as I can. My mom still blames him for that and not doing any after school activities.

If you score above 600 or 30 and have an average unweighted in the 90s you should be able to get into UW. Provided you're not applying to a tough program.

a lot of publics also do rolling admissions. for example, I know a kid that waited so long to send in his Penn State application(for a safety) that he ended up getting into UPenn but not Penn State. the longer you wait, the less spots are
remaining and the pickier the admissions people can be.

Well at least your brother isn't 35 grand in the hole from going to a school as expensive at UWM. I was going to go there, but they didn't have any money left in their swimming and diving fund to give me. Oh well. The national champion from last year is going to UWM, but they don't even have money for him, and I was 9th.
