I got to meet with the guy who created the FIRST running program this week when i was at Furman on a college visit...he was really shocked about how many miles i have been putting in (about high 60's during the season for a girl) i just thought it was interesting that he thought that running that much was bad for me...

Re: FIRST Running Program
well considering i am now on crutches i would say he was concered...his plan is all about running less...you know his plan on running 3 days a week but he said that high school runners should be running more than 3 days a week but not that much milage...he said instead of the "junk" miles i was doing in the mornings to trade that in with cross training so that i reduce the impact on my legs but still get some good cardio work in to help my running

Re: FIRST Running Program
I believe sub5 made a topic on this once.
I don't really know any elite girl that goes over 50 miles per week. Hasay's coach told me once that she stays around 40 in the on season, maybe up to 50 or slightly more in the off season. Babcock/Tarver are both around 30 mpw. Even Durkin who was said to do "high mileage" does not go over 50 or so. I also occasionally talk to Lambie who had mentioned a while ago that she did around 40 mpw in high school (obviously she does more now though).
To quote someone on that topic "Paula Radcliffe only did around 25 mpw in high school. She was shocked/surprised at the amount of mileage some of the girls were doing (40-50)."
So yes, 60 mpw for a high school girl would be considered a lot. It seems like most of the top high school boys were running anywhere from 60-80. However, keep in mind that the girls may be running for the same time as the boys, but obviously since the boys are faster they would cover more mileage in this time.
Overall, the thing about running very high mileage is if you want to run in college etc. you don't really have "more room for improvement." Many college coaches would rather take a 4:20 miler off of 35 mpw than a 4:17 miler off of 70 mpw.
Anyways, slightly off topic but I thought since the topic was kind of "what's high mileage"..

Re: FIRST Running Program
I didn't know that article existed but it's interesting.
And yea, I do know her coach because he's part of a lot of running circles and travels around. He has connections all over the place lol. He is also pretty good friends with Fleet's coach, Coach Paragas, and others.
