one thing i have found impressive that he did
    after his 199 mile run
(yes i know with breaks and everything but still)

he still found the energy to run the last mile in under 6min.
for a guy in his shape is not that impressive but considering how far he just ran. i am impressed.

You're both right, he couldn't have taken too long of a break because of lactic acid build-up, so he must've gone slow in the miles leading up to it and then taken a short break.

the guy is not going to stop 1 mile before the finish and take a break. he was doing this to raise money for a baby that wasnt in good condition. he was being interviewed and stuff.
it would look bad for his "reputation" lol

I am an aspiring ultra runner. I signed up for the Leadville 100 this summer and have a trail 50k in a couple weeks.

I definitely agree with some of you that ultra runners are slow, and not as talented at shorter distances like a marathon or 10k. I'm a good example of a guy that isn't fast, but I love to go out on the trails and run. Anton Krupicka, a talented 100 mile trail runner, has said that he could be beaten by most Division III cross country guys in an 8k, but that none of them could do 200+ mile weeks consistently like he could. I think ultra running deserves more respect in the running community today. It would be like 10 second 100m sprinters discrediting milers that run 3:50s for being slow. Marathoners running on roads is different from ultras on mountain bike and jeep trails in the mountains at 10,000 feet or more above sea level.

About Dean, I hate how he does publicity stunts all of the time. I do respect him for accomplishing some tough things though.

But the competition in ultras is still not as good as the mile or 100m because most people never try for ultras and therefore there is a lot less of a talent pool.

Everywhere on the internet, I read about how "untalented" ultra runners
are, but the fact is they are the only ones that are out there with the
balls to run 26.2+ miles. Maybe they aren't the fastest ones out there, but as
distance runners you should respect the tortoise instead of the hare. I just think there should be more recognition. For World's Strongest Man, I don't see a lot of people pulling trains or lifting Atlas Stones, but they get respect in the strength world. I doubt there is a huge amount of athletes who are even capable of doing those incredible lifts just like there are not many people willing to go incredible distances.

I'm not putting down ultra runners, I'm merely stating that the ultra competition is not as good as it good be. Just about everyone in America runs a short sprint and a mile at one point in their lives and therefore find out if they're good at it or not. Not many people ever try ultra running. If everyone did, the competition would be a lot more fierce. All I'm saying is there are still a lot of talented ultra runners out there who don't know it yet.

And I don't consider myself a distance runner, I consider myself a middle distance runner. I'm not really that good at anything longer than a mile.
