New to XC Empty New to XC

Post by xotrackkgirl Thu Jun 19, 2008 1:13 pm

I've been running track for 7 years, and I've always been a sprinter. The compettion is getting so tough, though. I've been missing cut-offs by 1/2 a second. So, I really want to expand a bit and start doing 800's and I really want try XC this year. Also, my times get better as they move up. 100/400. Do you think trying this is a good idea? And, are there any tips on how to get ready for XC?

Cross Country would be an awesome idea for anyone trying to move up in distance. I know of some of the best XC people on our team are recruited 400m runners. Not only would it be a good idea, but probably something you could accell at.

i doubt XC will help for the 400m, but for the 800 it will. maybe you'll learn to like XC more than track, who knows.

yes xc helps your 400. You might not think it does, but actually it helps you keep your forum near the end or the 400. In the 400 the most important part of running it, is that you have good forum throught the entire race. When you are racing people around the same speed as you the 2 things that make the difference between you being first and last is 1. is being mentally tough to stick through the pain, which is something u learn to deal with in xc which we all know and 2. is your forum. If you are tight anytime during the race you are going to lose valuble energy and time out there.

one of the girls who ran the 400 in track ran xc this year to help her endurance in the 400...but then she got injured during the xc season and the same injury came back during track

XC will help a lot with any distance in track (the longer the distance in track the more xc helps though)

we have a couple sprinters on our xc team who do it just to keep running all year and they're not great at it but they know that come track they'll be good. so go for it.

We had a bunch of sprinters on our team last year. Definitely not a bad idea...XC works on aspects of running that full out track running doesn't always cover. I felt like it definitely allowed for a little bit more physical confidence (you become more aware of your footing and balance) on and off the track. I say go for it! If anything, it's fun and is a good way to make sure you're running all year.

Yeah XC has almost no effect on the 400m. It will, however, give you a good endurance base that will help you when you run 800s in track. I would still train for sprinting in the track season though.

yes you should definatly go for it! XC is a great thing to get involved in. Especially if you are looking to improve or move up to the 800 in track. Our track/XC coach is always encouraging the sprinters in track to try out XC. You never know what you can do until you try. You might even find that you are better at longer distances or you like it better. Even if you are not that great or just mediocre, it will still help for track by running all year like the other people ^above said.

Very Happy XC is awesome. You'll love it.
