too much treadmill? fitness? Empty too much treadmill? fitness?

    Post by running_violet Fri Jan 09, 2009 7:46 pm

okay, well i posted this same thing in RW but, i'll post it here to for those who don't post on RW anymore.

okay, so this week out of my mere 25 miles (i'm trying to build up right now...coach doesn't want me over 25 but w/e) annyway...out of my 25 miles this week, about 15 of them were on the treadmill.
normally i try to do no more than 1 run a week on the treadmill (it's usually my tempo or speedwork ) but however this week's winter weather has been harsher than normal and next week's is supposed to be pretty bad too.
if i bring my music i'm fine with running on the treadmill but my question is...
am i getting in less shape on the treadmill than i would be outside?
normally if i run outside my 5 mile time is about 4 minutes slower than it is on the treadmill, so i was hoping that if i just ran a little faster on the treadmill than i would have outside than it will make up for it.
    what do you think?

btw, i'm an 8th grade girl. and one last question...
how much mileage this winter do you think is too much for my age? during the summer my top was 31. i had a good xc season and hoping for a better track season so should i just get up to 30 during the winter?

Personally, I can't stand running on a treadmill.
    But that isn't your question.

You are never going to get as much out of a run on a treadmill as you would on solid ground, due to the fact that there is no terrain variation.

How to make up for it?
My only answer is to run for a longer period of time and at slightly elevated pace then what you normally do for the same type run outside.

Are you building back from an injury?

My only issue with treadmills is that they do tend to have a surface that's really tough on your legs, impact-wise, if you are doing heavy mileage. I would definitely make the effort to get outside. If there's snow, find a park that won't freeze over and plow your way through. Stay off roads and sidewalks if they are icy, and if you can't go out definitely do some supplemental biking and swimming.

If you have to run on a treadmill, moniter your h/r so that you can get a good gauge of effort. You don't want to overextend by going too fast, and you should keep your h/r in the same range as you do when you are running outside. I don't mean that it's an exact science, but it will keep you from hurting yourself or, alternately, hurting your fitness level.

I think thirty miles/week is fine, and I would even go a little higher if it doesn't feel like enough for you. Just make sure that it's QUALITY. 30 mpw of long, easy stuff isn't going to make you better at sprints/middle distance. Get a workout from your coach or an older teammate so you don't miss anything.

    Good luck!

and no, i'm not coming back from an injury. i'm just building up for like base training.
by quality...30 miles of all tempo or what?
about the bolded part...i thought that is what base is supposed to be w/ like one tempo run a week...?

you don't need to do tempo's at all right now unless you want to. a treadmill is fine if thats all you can access, just run for the same time at the same effort that you would on normal ground. if you can, get a heart moniter and then you will know how fast to run and it will translate back to solid ground. its just harder on a treadmill, but cardio is cardio

I don't think you need to be going over 30 miles a week in 8th grade. I'm not an expert though, so don't take my word for it. Still, 8th grade really doesn't matter, you are likely still growing, and you have 4 more years where you will be putting in some serious work. I guess see what other people say...

As for treadmill, its ok but make sure you focus on your form. I ran on the treadmill a lot last year and found that my form really deteriorated, especially how I landed on my foot, I became a big heel striker. I'd reccomend going at the same pace as outdoor runs, but put the incline up to 1%.

The whole point of base is to take it easy. Doing lots of quality mileage now will just leave you burned out later in the season. Save the quality training for track season.

i would suggest staying off the treadmill as much as possible. It's boring and probably not as benefitial (just from my experience with it).
Don't worry about high mileage or "quality". You're only in 8th grade. You'll have plenty of time to start doing higher mileage in your later high school years.

25-30 is fine for your age, although while you should be doing SOME track work, it would be better for long term development to be doing most of your stuff at Aerobic, easy paces.

As for the treadmill, just keep the effort the same as it would be outside. Usually that means for me going a little bit faster to make up for lack of wind and hills.

The whole point of base is to take it easy. Doing lots of quality mileage now will just leave you burned out later in the season. Save the quality training for track season.

Running at 10 minute pace if you're a six-minute miler isn't going to do anything, even in base. You don't want to run tempo every day, of course, and you should watch it with the intervals, but base can't just be talk-pace for 30 mpw (IMO).

But it really depends on your fitness level I guess. Definitely talk to your coach about to see how much of a base he wants on you before the start of your season.
