Is there a point where running high mileage becomes detrimental to racing well?

Well it will if most of those miles are junk miles and not workouts.

If you're overtraining, yes. Or if it's time to taper, yes. Otherwise, there's no such thing as junk mileage unless you're going slower than 10-11 minute miles.

No, not during base. You aren't supposed to race well during base, really.

Junk miles doesn't really have a pace. If you feel fine and want to do some more mileage, that's fine it doesn't mean it's junk. But if you are in pain or fatigued or whatever and are forcing yourself to run through the pain just to get to that round number for mileage for whatever week then that is junk or junk mileage.

Yeah. If you are running far your not running fast and you probably won't race well (unless your training for a ultra) but don't think you shouldn't run far because like we all know a base is important and helps in the long run.
