How long does it take to get out of shape? Empty How long does it take to get out of shape?

Post by hannah Sat Oct 18, 2008 6:32 am

So I have my second-to-last meet today, I really wanted to make a huge jump, because I've been running 23:30s almost every meet this season and after I finish I always feel like I could have gone faster. But then I got a bad cold and I decided to take a bunch of days off so the cold wouldn't drag on forever. But oh wait it has, and now I've taken 4 off days and 5 light runs in the last week and a half and I'm still sick and I feel like I can't make a huge breakthrough and I'm really sad and angry.
Could someone please tell I can't have lost any shape and make me feel better?

Any shape you have lost is minimal, and if you had kept running, you would be in a lot worse condition because when you're sick your body needs rest.

Seems like everyones getting sick, must be the weather change. A week and a half off shouldn't be that bad. Your legs are still in shape but you may notice its harder to control your breathing but make sure you do.

I think everyone gets some sort of cold during the fall.

for future feference, if you have a decent aerobic base, you should be able to got atleast 10 days without seeing a drop. if you have a huge aerobic base, you should be able to go 2 weeks.

Luckly I had a huge base this summer so I didn't lose a thing in my two weeks off. Rolling Eyes

Sorry that I desided to do what a 4:14 miler said he did (or at least we thought he was a 4:14 miler) instead of doing what a guy I was already faster than was doing (no offence miler).
I based my entire summer running plan off of that loser and I am now paying. I thought it made sense, run short fast distances to get good at short fast distances. I was wrong.
I am going to try run a large base this winter as long as swimming doesn't get in the way.

Yeah but I thought it was working because I was breaking prs every race I ran, so I continued the original plan. The begining of my season was great as well because I was running fast times on hard courses (and crappy times on easy course Rolling Eyes ). Then I slowly faded and then got injuried.

It was good while it lasted.

I had the same problem. I went to camp a couple weeks ago and couldnt run for 3 days + another 2 because of the weekend and being super super busy. So I only had 5 days off and I only ran 10 seconds off my pr and wasn't even tired.

Glad to see you were fine :]
