Why do you throw up? (sort of gross I know) Empty Why do you throw up? (sort of gross I know)

Post by hannah Fri Sep 12, 2008 10:05 pm

Does anyone know why you throw up when you're running really hard? I know it has something to do with the fight-or-flight bit, but is there some sort of threshold you reach?
And if there is, how can you extend it?

I feel like that's my biggest problem when I race- my legs and my breathing feel fine, but then all of a sudden I start gagging and have have to stop/slow down.

Thanks (and sorry if this is gross, I just really want to know)

    I never have this problem..

I just thought it was from over-exhaustion or something.

idk I know you feel sick when you eat before running because blood is pulled away from your stomache to go to the muscles so you can't digest... but I don't know what makes you throw up after races... because I definately always feel like I am going to even if I didn't eat anything beforehand.

i throw up alot. its disgusting. like last year in track i did about 8 times. i probably just have a weak stomach though. i think it has to do with the food you eat and how well your body can take certain things.

It's attributed to like you said lactic threshold, and whats in your system already. Don't consume dairy products before practice and don't eat too close to workouts. It's all been said before and theres not much you can do about it. Besides, anytime you puke you know you got a good workout.

Many would say that means that you pushed yourself too hard in a workout.

Too hard in a workout, yes. In a race, the goal is basically running yourself as close as death without actually dying.

Some people just have a tendency to throw up while running, regardless of how hard they push themselves.

Not really. It goes more towards sprinters than anything, but if the workout is supposed to be hard then the harder the better.

i really don't think it has to anything with your threshold, people can run themselves into the ground and still keep it all in their stomach.

Not when it builds up so much from lactic acid. It also builds up when you sprint, hence why people will puke after a race when they give it all they got from their kick. People don't puke mid race, and if they do it's because they are going to hard. Like I said puking will usually result from sprinting, not threshold runs or lsd runs. Jus sayin.
