    sprints during xc

Post by eternally_running on Fri Sep 05, 2008 9:21 pm

my coach doesnt believe that it is good to do some sprint work during xc season. She said that it is only for track season, and will mess you up. i dont agree. At my old school, we did sprint work like once a week, and it did not mess us up, it helped us with our kicks at the end of the race. Is she right or what?
    what do u guys think?

How far/short of sprints are you thinking?
We do 200m intervals or repeats every so often...that's as short as we go.

I don't think it's very beneficial, because my coach started doing sprint training all the time, with 100s, 200s, and 400s instead of concentrating on the more important speed work, and the average varsity time has gone up by more than 1.5 mins from same time last year.

We do speedwork sometimes, but it's almost always to keep us on level (if we're pushing the limits on our workouts, for example, coach will give us some sprints to get us worn out before our distance work) or as strides after a workout.

200-1600 repeats are a good thing to do during the xc season just not every day.

Unless you ran too slow for the race, I don't think speed will help you that much in your kick, I think the largest benefit is the overall boost in your running economy.

And when you say no speed work does that mean just easy runs or what?

You don't need any sprinting workouts, or even rep workouts at all during the season. It's xc, not track. Doing reps will not improve your kick.

my coach uses a system where the intervals in speed workouts get shorter as the season goes on. it's all a part of peaking perfectly.
